French, early 1900's..... one of my favorite eras for erotica.
This is English.... from the early 1920's.
You can see the difference that 50 years or so can make in terms of
image sharpness, brightness, and composition.....
these are American, circa 1955.
Some images are erotic, not because of what they portray, but what they do not.
You can't really see anything, but your mind can fill in the blanks easily enough.
This was a public advertisement for a English brand of soap..... circa 1890.
Anything sexual here is strictly in the mind of the viewer.... right?
Sometimes, the image leaves little to the imagination.
This one is from a book of erotic art, published in the mid 1800's, in London.
The caption, in French, says " The delirium of lovemaking " - and features a couple
in the act of mutual oral stimulation, while another woman is busy whipping them.
This is from a Japanese woodcarving, from around the 17th century.
The caption indicates that the servant girl will do anything to please her master.
Aaahhh.... it's so hard to get such good help, these days......
Here are some more classical examples of erotic art ----
This one is from Greece --- and is about 2500 years old.
They don't call that kinda sex "Greek" for nuthin.
In this carving, a priest is having his huge shaft sucked by a nun.
Circa 1500's. Germany.
French artists in the late 1800's were quite fond of these kind of figure studies.
And of course, the French loved explicit erotica -- at a time when it was unavailable
in most parts of the West, ( early 1900's ) in Paris,
this kind of material was sold in newsstands.
This one is from an Italian book of erotica, printed in the early 1920's.
And this one, from around the 1880's, is German, and features characters from an Italian opera.
This is from an Indian lovemaking manual similar to the Kama Sutra.
The date is somewhere in the 1700's.
And finally,
I think you can easily see the influence these older approaches to erotic images
has had on current forms.......
Even modern Japanese erotica harkens back to more antique forms....
This contemporary drawing uses pre-World War II symbolic language
to express a concept of total sexual submission.
An interest of mine is graphic art from around the turn of the century.
And, as I have been informed by several readers over the years, I also seem to have a very active libido. ( I hope to be the same when I'm 99 .... )
So, what better type of thing to collect-- than what was euphemistically called "French Postcards" from a bygone era.
Some of these were made in France, some weren't ...
.................................. but the French had the reputation as .... welll..... looose.
And so all kinds of risque cards , made all kinds of places, got to be called "French".
This one here was made in America.... around 1910.
There's something very fascinating about these....
................. seeing what would stimulate the prurient interest of our granddaddies and great-granddaddies.
My great-grandfather on my father's side served in France in World War 1....
.......... and he probably brought back cards very similar to some of these.
Despite their reputation, though....
you can see that, while they were suggestive, they weren't exactly explicit.
At least, the ones I'm posting here today aren't, anyway........................
I have to admit that I find these much sexier than the more explicit ones.
I figure what is concealed is always sexier than what is exposed....
................. weird, huh?
Oh well.
I guess that principle is why 'playing hard to get' works so well on us guys, too.

It seemed that women were becoming more independent thinking -
--- and men of the time found it , well..... , appealing.
It could be the perceived vulnerability, sure......
................ or I think it might be something else altogether..
Anyway, the rolled down stockings would have been particularly provocative.

This was a kind of post card aimed at lonely soldiers at the front....

There was definitely some hostility to these type of images.... 
...despite the inate God-given beauty and grace of the human form,
photography like this would create quite a negative reaction in the kill-joy crowd, I can tell ya.
( the US Postal Service wouldnt have accepted any of these for delivery in the U.S. up until about 20 years ago.)
I guess those sames kinda people are still around even today.
I hope they're better looking than this group, though.
